Des Moines Real Estate Statistics 3-27-09

Week Ending March 27, 2009

This past week, the Iowa Association of REALTORS held their annual Legislative Bus-In day event.   Around 300 REALTORS attended the event from around the state including 85 from The Des Moines Area Association of REALTORS.

The event started out with a luncheon with keynote speaker John Tuccillo.  Tuccillo is one of the foremost real estate and housing finance economists in the United States.  He is also former Chief Economist for the National Association of REALTORS.

Tuccillo predicts that the current economic recession will last until late August or early September of this year with home mortgage interest rates remaining low until the first months of 2010.  Home sales will also begin to recover in the third quarter of this year and pricing will not begin to rise until the first of the new year.

During the afternoon session at the state capital, the Des Moines contingency of REALTORS met with Senator Larry Noble and Representatives Chris Hagenow and Kent Sornsen who made time to come and discuss the issues with our members.  These issues of interest include: Lead Based Paint legislation, Local Option Sales Taxes & Impact Fees, Homestead Property Taxes and Real Estate Transfer Taxes.
